In April 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a public art project with the Tulsa Global District, alongside several other local artists.
The idea was simple but fun. Artists were invited to transform ordinary trash bins into individual pieces of artwork that would eventually be placed at different businesses throughout the district.
Projects like this are a great reminder that public art can exist almost anywhere. It does not always have to be a large mural or traditional canvas. Even something as ordinary and functional as a trash can can become an opportunity to introduce more color, creativity, and personality into a neighborhood.
Once placed throughout the district, each piece became a small addition to the businesses and public spaces around it. Together, they helped bring more art into everyday places while also creating opportunities for local artists to contribute something of their own to the area.
For me, it was another fun opportunity to experiment with painting on a three-dimensional form instead of a flat surface. You have to think differently about how the artwork wraps around the object and how someone might experience it from different angles.
Overall, it was a cool community project and another example of the Tulsa Global District finding creative ways to bring artists, businesses, and the neighborhood together.
