This project came about through another mural.
While I was working on the mural at East Side Blends, the owner of Espino Insurance saw me painting and approached me about creating something for one of his own locations.
That conversation eventually led to this 8 by 8 foot mural featuring Vicente Fernández, one of the most recognizable figures in Mexican music and culture.
Painting Vicente was a great opportunity to create something that immediately connected with people. His image and music are familiar across generations, and he represents a piece of Mexican culture that many people have grown up with.
Portrait work at this scale also comes with its own challenges. Capturing someone recognizable while working across a large brick surface requires paying attention to proportions, shadows, and details while constantly stepping back to see how everything reads from a distance.
This mural also became another example of how creating work publicly can lead to unexpected opportunities. When you spend days outside painting, people stop, ask questions, have conversations, and see the process happen in real time.
In this case, one wall directly led to another.
I’m thankful to Espino Insurance for seeing my work in the community, reaching out, and trusting me to bring an icon like Vicente Fernández to their wall.
