Frieren Game Room Mural

This residential project was one of my favorites.
I was invited to paint a Frieren inspired mural inside a pinball game room for a wonderful family. Their main requests were a dragon, the shapeshifter treasure box, and the main characters traveling together on an adventure.
From there, I had room to build out the world around them.
I wanted the mural to feel cinematic and immersive, almost like a scene from a medieval fantasy movie. I added mountains, clouds, open scenery, and enough depth to make the room feel like it opened into another world.
One of my favorite parts was figuring out how to make the dragon feel larger than the wall itself.
Instead of keeping the entire head inside the main canvas, I used a perspective illusion that allowed part of the dragon to extend beyond the wall and onto a section of the ceiling that leaned forward.
The challenge was making sure the dragon did not look distorted.
I had to account for the change in angle so that, from the intended viewing position, the head still read correctly while also feeling like it was pushing beyond the boundaries of the mural.
That little bit of illusion helped make the dragon feel much larger and more present in the room.
For the rest of the mural, I used a combination of aerosol and acrylic paint with brushes, which gave me the flexibility to build larger atmospheric areas while still keeping the characters, edges, and smaller details clean.
Clean was important on this one.
Because it was inside a residential game room and surrounded by finished surfaces, everything needed to feel intentional and polished.
Beyond the artwork itself, it was also nice getting to know the family throughout the process.
On reveal day, I signed the mural and got to see everything fully come together in the finished space.
This project had a little bit of everything I enjoy.
Characters, fantasy, scenery, perspective, technical problem solving, and the freedom to create something immersive.
Definitely one of my favorites.
