This was a completely different kind of mural experience.
I had the opportunity to create artwork for a television production here in Tulsa, painting a mural that became part of a Latin newspaper office set.
For now, there are still a few details about the project that I am keeping under wraps, but I am excited to share more once everything is officially out in the world.
The turnaround on this one was fast.
I was contacted pretty last minute and ended up completing the mural in a single day.
That has honestly been part of my experience working around film and television productions in general. Sometimes ideas come together very quickly, something gets added to the set, and suddenly there is a small window to make it happen.
I would definitely love to see more planning happen ahead of time on projects like these, but when the opportunity comes up and I am able to make it work, I do.
Sometimes you just have to lock in.
For the mural itself, I painted a Latina woman alongside a hummingbird, surrounded by flowers and additional details throughout the background.
Along the side, I added the words:
Nuestra Comunidad.
That phrase helped guide the feeling of the piece.
I wanted the mural to look like something that could naturally belong inside a space centered around community, culture, stories, and the people represented by them.
The hummingbird and flowers brought movement and color into the composition, while the portrait gave the mural a human presence.
Creating artwork for a set is also different because the mural has to work as part of a larger environment.
It is not only about how the painting looks by itself. It has to feel believable within the room, work alongside everything else being designed around it, and help tell the story of the space without overpowering it.
That made this one especially fun.
There is something surreal about painting a mural in one day and knowing that eventually people may see it as part of a completely different world on screen.
