La Plaza Santa Cecilia | Mural Update

This mural was commissioned by the late Eduardo V. Mora, someone who played a meaningful role in some of my earlier work as an artist.

I first began working with Mr. Mora in 2022, when he commissioned me to create a couple of business signs. At the time, I didn't even own a plotter. I was outlining designs and cutting everything by hand, figuring things out as I went and slowly building my experience with each project.

Mr. Mora was someone who liked to take initiative. If something needed to be improved, updated, or brought back to life, he wanted to make it happen. One of the projects we worked on was updating the directory of businesses inside La Plaza Santa Cecilia, which had become outdated as businesses within the plaza changed.

That eventually led to this mural.

The scroll itself was an existing piece of artwork inside the plaza. I was commissioned to update the information within it, primarily repainting the lettering and business information while working within the original mural.

I completed the work in January of 2023.

Around that time, Mr. Mora and I would often talk about what else we could do. We talked about future projects, improvements to the plaza, and other artwork I hoped to create as I continued growing as an artist.

Only a few weeks after this mural was completed, Mr. Mora passed away.

Looking back, that makes this project different for me. What began as a relatively straightforward mural update became one of the last projects I had the opportunity to work on with him.

Years later, I can also look at this piece as a snapshot of where I was in my own journey. I was taking on opportunities, learning new processes, and gradually moving toward larger and more ambitious work.

I’m grateful that Mr. Mora trusted me with these projects during that period of my career and gave me opportunities to contribute something of my own to La Plaza Santa Cecilia.

May he rest in peace.
