Wynwood Mural | Miami Art Basel
Miami, Florida | December 12, 2023
Aerosol | Collaboration with Jose Scott
In December 2023, I had the opportunity to travel to Miami during Art Basel through a research program with Tulsa Creative Engine. The trip exposed me to a completely different art environment and ultimately became an experience that gave me a lot of inspiration for where I could take my own work.
During the trip, my friend Jose Scott, an artist from Oklahoma City, and I created this piece together in the Wynwood area. Shout out to Jose!
The mural was spontaneous. It was something created in the moment as an expression of appreciation for my girlfriend at the time. We found a wall, started painting, and let the piece develop from there. What began as a run-up eventually turned into something the property owners were happy to have after we spoke with them and they saw the finished piece.
There was something freeing about the entire experience. We were creating away from home, surrounded by artists and artwork from all over, and contributing a small piece of ourselves to a place known for its murals and street art.
The trip itself was just as important as the mural.
I experienced many different sides of the art world in a short amount of time. I went from DIY events and grassroots creative spaces to high-end galleries and luxury art experiences. I met people, networked, studied the work around me, and took in as much as I could.
Seeing all of those different worlds existing within the same art ecosystem opened my mind. It gave me a better sense of what was possible and where art could take me if I continued pursuing it.
This mural represents a moment of freedom, experimentation, travel, and discovery. I went to Miami to learn and experience something new, and I came back with more inspiration, new connections, and a much bigger idea of what could be possible.
Most of all, Iām thankful I had the opportunity to go, create, and leave a little piece of myself in Miami.
