This mural at Morelos in the Tulsa Global District was a special one for me because it brought my work into the same part of Tulsa where I grew up.
Painting a large-scale piece on the side of an established grocery store felt like another milestone. With each project, I was beginning to build more trust within the community and more legitimacy as a mural artist. This project became especially meaningful because many more opportunities in the Global District would follow.
The painting itself was an experience. I worked at all different hours of the day, sometimes painting during the afternoon and other times working late into the night, occasionally until 3 in the morning.
Spending that much time outside and in one place gave me the opportunity to interact with all kinds of people. I had conversations with people from many different walks of life, from those simply passing by to people who lived and worked in the area. Some nights were quiet, while others got pretty interesting with everything happening around me.
That became part of the experience of creating the mural.
Looking back, this project represents more than another wall I painted. I was putting my work into a neighborhood that was already part of my own story. At the same time, I was beginning to establish myself as an artist people could trust with larger, more visible projects.
In many ways, this mural helped open the door to the work I would continue doing throughout the Global District.
